Separate filming locations from inspiration
| Location | What is documented | Official visitor route |
|---|---|---|
| Divinity School | Filmed as the Hogwarts infirmary | Check Divinity School access. Availability can change |
| Duke Humfrey’s Library | Filmed as the Hogwarts library | Book a 30-minute or 60-minute official library tour |
| New College cloisters and courtyard | Filmed for Hogwarts scenes, including the Goblet of Fire sequence in which Draco Malfoy is turned into a ferret | Use the college visitor entrance and check planned closures |
| Christ Church Hall Staircase | The staircase was filmed for Harry Potter | Book a Christ Church visit and check live room closures |
| Christ Church Great Hall | The real dining hall inspired the design of Hogwarts’ Great Hall. The Hogwarts dining-hall scenes were not filmed here | Included only when the visitor route and live closures allow |
Walk Bodleian, New College, then Christ Church
Start with the timed Bodleian room you have booked. Walk east to New College for the cloisters, then continue south-west through the centre to Christ Church. This sequence keeps the two closest locations together and leaves the separate Christ Church ticket enough time.
Do not treat the sequence as guaranteed access. Book the interior you would most regret missing, check each official closure page on the day, and view the remaining architecture from public streets if a working college or library closes.
Compare the controlled library rooms in the Bodleian Library tour guide and the separate gate rules in the college visiting guide.
Choose a tour for access or interpretation
The featured Potter tour lists New College and a quiz, with Divinity School access subject to availability. Another option lists both New College and the Divinity School. An outdoor magic-led walk offers performance and history without making interiors the point.
Compare Potter walking tours before deciding whether to coordinate the sites independently.
Use official closure pages on the day
Oxford’s working colleges and libraries can close for academic or ceremonial reasons. New College currently keeps its cloisters open while the lawn is closed for reseeding until spring 2027, but individual closure periods still apply. Christ Church lists known room closures against visitor information, and Bodleian tours can change around University business.
Keep an exterior route, museum or Covered Market pause ready. A substitute college can still be beautiful, but it is not the same filming location.
Visit the University behind the films
These are study, worship and work spaces before they are screen locations. Follow photography rules, keep voices low and stay within the visitor route.
The Bodleian, New College and Christ Church use separate visitor systems. One confirmed filming location is a stronger plan than assuming every door will open.
