Walk 0.7 mile from Broad Street to the Covered Market

Start at Oxford Tourism Information, 16 Broad Street. The mapped route is 0.7 mile and about 15 minutes of pure walking before sightseeing stops. Allow roughly 75–90 minutes when you pause at each landmark and keep all interiors optional.

1. Sheldonian Theatre — begin with the University’s ceremonial centre and the Broad Street view.
2. Bridge of Sighs — follow Broad Street and New College Lane to Hertford College’s covered bridge.
3. Radcliffe Camera — turn south for Oxford’s most recognisable library exterior.
4. University Church — continue to the High Street edge of Radcliffe Square.
5. Carfax Tower — walk west along High Street to the city’s central crossroads.
6. Covered Market — finish among the market lanes, close to Cornmarket and Broad Street.

Use the 0.4-mile version when time is tight

Keep the same Broad Street start, then walk to the Sheldonian Theatre, Bridge of Sighs and Radcliffe Camera before finishing at the Covered Market. Google Maps measures this shorter sequence at 0.4 mile and about 10 minutes of pure walking.

Open the short route in Google Maps. Allow 45–60 minutes with brief stops.

Add Christ Church Meadow for a three-hour route

Use the 90-minute central route first. After the Covered Market, continue through Carfax and down St Aldate’s toward Christ Church Meadow. Follow public paths only, then return toward the High Street by Merton Street. Allow the full three hours for unhurried exterior stops and the meadow loop.

Do not add several ticketed interiors to the same three-hour plan. If Christ Church, a college or a Bodleian room matters, make that timed admission the centre of the route and shorten the public-street loop around it.

Add interiors without breaking the route

The University Church, colleges and Bodleian buildings each control their own access. If one interior matters, check it first and schedule the route around that opening rather than assuming every doorway will be available.

Keep a no-stairs, rain and closure version ready

No-stairs plan: stay on public streets and ground-level exterior viewpoints. Skip tower climbs and any interior whose step-free route has not been confirmed. Central Oxford has cobbles, kerbs and uneven paving, so visitors with mobility requirements should check the exact route before setting out.

Rain plan: shorten the exterior sequence to Broad Street, the Bodleian quarter and the Covered Market, then use a confirmed public museum or library space for shelter rather than assuming a college gate will be open.

Closure plan: put the most access-sensitive booking first. If a college or library room closes, keep the public route intact and replace that one stop with its exterior, a museum or the meadow extension.
